My great uncle, William Schill, was a coin collector. When I was 8 years old, I started showing an interest in coins. My mother told him about this interest and he gave me a number of foreign and US coins to start me off, all of which I still have. Included in them were two large cents. One of them is nearly flat with just a hint of the bust on the obverse and nothing visible on the reverse. The other one is pictured here.

For years, I never knew the date. Just recently I found out about all the varieties and how they were catalogued. So I spent some time researching the large cent that he gave me. I believe it's an 1802 Sheldon 231 stemless reverse. What do you think?

BTW - If I wasn't paying for Christian school for 3 kids with another starting in a year, I would definitely add a number of these to my collection.

Matt

I have very little knowledge about these coins, but I appreciated the story behind the coin.

I would grade it FR-2 but your family history makes it worth much more than a regular dateless Draped Bust cent
