Hello,

I need some advice on verifying the authenticity of Buffalo nickel's mintmarks. Please comment on the following 4 questions:

1) Do all 'S' mintmarks for all years of Buffalo nickels have to be stamped at the exact same location on the reverse side in order to be considered genuine?

2) Do all of these 'S' mintmarks have to be the exact same physical size for all years that the Buffalo nickels were made in order to be considered authentic?

3) Does the following close-up of the 'S' mintmark of this attached
1917-S Buffalo nickel appear to be genuine and not counterfeit?

1917-S-Buffalo-Nickel-Genuine-Mintmark?

4) Please recommend a good website that has closeup pictures of authentic mintmarks for US coins.

Thanks

Prior to 1990, all mintmarks were hand punched on a die so slight positioning variation is to be expected. There should not be a large difference in size but there can be very small differences due to the depth of the punch applied to the die. A shallow punch would result in a slightly small and weak mintmark while a deep punch would result in a slightly larger and bold mintmark. A 1917-S Buffalo nickel, while a better date coin, is not really a leading candidate for adding a mintmark.

Here is a mintmark reference for you- http://www.varietyvista.com/Mintmark%20Styles.htm
