It's an F with gouges. Note that the mintmark H for the '98's are all over the place, as they were punched in. Some touch the leaves, some far, some low, etc. They are all about the same as far as availability.

I just consulted my Charlton and there aren't really any varieties on this coin. Sorry for asking a silly question

In this date are the "high H", ad "low "H", as well as varing positions, of the digits. due to both having been Hand-punched.
M<y source for this info, is the CCCS. Highly recommended by Bill in Burl, among others.

Jack Griffin's 1992 book on Canadian Large Cent varieties lists 15 varieties for the 1898H. Charlton is not the place to go to get info on varieties. Many more varieties have been found since Jack's searching through the 90's and I'd guess that there were closer to 20 1898 varieties now. You have repunched 8's & 9's, at least 8 different placements for the H's and various others, including spacings. I have nearly 5000 Victoria Large Cents with over 30 1898's ... and there aren't 4 alike.
