According to Krause, 1869 is one of the scarcer dates, price-wise. As usual, condition is key to value; CV is $12 in Fine, $35 in VF, $130 in EF.

As for ebay completed items searches, click on "Advanced search" at the top of just about any ebay page; enter your keywords, and check the "completed listings only" box. A login box will probably pop up now, as you have to be an ebay member to run completed item searches (I don't know why, but it's true).

I just tried doing that for "1869 halfpenny", and http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1869-RARE-HA...EF_W0QQitemZ150009888595QQihZ005QQcategoryZ98762QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

interesting, maybe you could cast your eye on my coin and let me know what you grade it at. to my untrained eye it looks to be in fairly decent condition . It was wrapped in plastic for years.

Sorry about the photos, they're not great

Thanks for the help Sap, what did you mean by 'Bin' anyway?

"BIN", short for "but it now" as opposed to going for the "usual" ebay auction.

I'd grade yours at VG, maybe Fine tops. American collectors would be more lenient at grading than I am, though. I think the "black" is just the toning, quite possibly exacerbated by the "plastic wrap". What kind of plastic was it? Lunch-wrap? A plastic bag? Something like that could certainly leach out nasty chemicals just like the notorious "PVC" coin pages, causing the coin to turn strange colours over time. I wouldn't worry about it, though - and trying to remove it would probably only make it look worse.

I was just in the process of putting it on ebay when it ocurred to me that it is unusual that only one other completed listing can be found for the same coin. (In fact if I search for 1869 half penny on ebay I cant find any at all)

does that not indicate that it is very rare?

Ah, a 2x2. That should be OK, then, unless it was one of the "bad ones" sold in the '60's or '70's, full of PVC.

I had forgotten...
