A few days ago I picked 2 PCGS MS-65 1884 P Vam-2a's Clashed (E's). I posted them on VW. I am thinking one of them is a early die state as it has almost 2 full legs of the (E) and the plate photo and listing is only one leg.

Gene looked at it there...Thanks Gene

I was looking at your threads over there - the clashing is spectacular.

I ran into a little honey hole of a few unsearched boxes of graded and raw Morgans. I am slated too return on Monday.

Other than either the lighting or the luster factor, I don't see the difference in the two photos Russ. Which one do you believe is the earlier state and why?

both are the early one, sorry for the confusion. The plate photo of this is of a single center leg. The upper leg is an EDS and are a weee bit harder to find! Leroy e-mailed me yesterday.

Oh, I understand. My interest is always perked when I hear of a 'die state' being bestowed upon certain coins, and I wonder how can these things be determined with any degree of accuracy ?

On this one I was told that the second leg is very light or a (shallow clash) and just thought normal die strikes wares away.

Quite possible Russ, as I would agree that this is the most likely scenario, and the most straight forward, although not the only possible one.

Earlier coins, (before the use of concave polishing plates) sometimes tell a different story, 1)normal die, 2)clash, 3)lapping, 4)clash over lapping.

On a Morgan, die states could be far more deceptive. 'Polishing' could easily eliminate the appearance of stage 3), cause 2) and 4) to appear identical, and even show that 1),3) and a possible 5) are one and the same state.
