Hello. I just recently started collecting large cents again - the cheaper the better - and I just purchased this odd-looking 1840. What's going on with the reverse? Those are raised lines on the coin that have worn down with the coin. Any ideas?

Those lines are caused by old angled cuts that pushed metal above the surface giving it a raised appearance, post-mint damage.

Exactly. Biokemist6 is 'the man'! How refreshing it is to see someone who can actually tell the difference between a cut and a die crack.
