Yo ho, me hearties!

Yesterday, me was browsin' Davy Jones' Locker (the junk bin) and, from me crow's nest, I spied an odd piece o' silver or two and a crusty old doubloon. Me wench was ready to weigh anchor; so, I approached the shop-keep and said, "Be ye ready to surrender this booty?"

"Yarrr!",he said. "You found this in the junk bin?" as he scooped up my 1964 Kennedy half, 1976 Bicentennial Half and my 1851 Large Cent with his massive hook. "Yer runnin' me through," he said, "but if you found them in the bin then that'll be $3."

"Avast, I'll take a treasure chest (Dansco 7070) and a 16x loupe to ease yer sufferin'." I replied.

So, let's see the booty ye old salts have plundered from the Davy Jones' locker (junk bin) as of late.

Yes, it looks like large cent was dug; most of the crud flaked right off of it.

What do ye scurvy dogs recommend to get the last of the barnacles off?

P.S. - I fully expect to hear many "don't do it!" replies!

I beleive BadThad always recommends this order:

1. Water
2. Acetone
3. Xylene

These will only remove gunk and not react or damage the metal. Use anything else and you risk damaging the coin. Be very careful with the last two and read up on them first.

I do recommend reading this thread for some good discussion on BadThad's coin conservation product.

after xylene there are a whole range of other chemicals you could try, but I doubt badthad would ever recommend then because they are hard to obtain and more likely to clean your hand of flesh than clean the coin of gunk
