I know that they recessed the date on the SLQ beginning in 1925 to try to get it to last longer, but plenty of them still wore completely away despite this change. Is there any way of positively knowing whether the worn down Type 2 SLQ (3 stars under the eagle) in my hand is post or pre-1925?

Interesting question, and one I have often wondered about myself.
Rest in Peace

I don't think figuring this out is an exact science, but logically, if your coin has VG-F details with no date; it is almost certainly pre-25 since VG/F post 25s will pretty much always display a full date. If it's a dateless slq worn down to FR2 or AG3; it is much tougher to tell whether or not it's pre-1925.

I don't think that's true, as I've seen plenty of AG post 1925 SLQ's with strong readable dates. I agree with Johnny, although chances are yours is pre-25.

This is true and the opposite is also true, I've seen lots of VF- looking pre-1925 SLQs with NO dates.

I'm of the opinion, the date design changed the viability of the date of this coin so much, if your coin does not have a readable date, it is virtually 100% pre-1925. (I may hear an argument about that. But I don't care).

You won't hear an argument from me. Here's the lowest graded quarter I could find on Heritage. The date is really protected from wear...by the time the date would be illegible, the coin itself would be difficult to identify.
