Wow! Very nice "no motto" piece. My humble opinion on grade is XF-45. From the pics I can't see much luster. No doubt a nice piece. An added bonus is the early San Fransisco Mint Mark.

Looks like a bit of a mushy strike so I'll say AU50. If ICG didn't call it a weak strike, I could see it going all the way down to VF35.
Congrats on the baby too!

Yeah I agree with Brad's assessment, and I'm betting it has way more luster in hand.

Thanks for the comments! I added some additional pictures in direct light that better show off the luster.
Congrats to Cownas, he nailed the grade!

No criticism here, but I was wondering something...
Why did you opt for a lower grade example when a higher grade AU-58 or MS-63 often isn't that much more expensive for common dates? Do you prefer having a better date in somewhat lower condition?

No offense taken, but you should do a price check for type 1 $20 libertys in AU-58 through MS-63. I paid $1480 for this one in XF-45. An AU-58 would be around 3 grand, MS-60 is around 7 grand and MS-63 is pushing 25 grand. My goal was to get a decent problem free example of a Type 1 $20 liberty for as close to melt as possible. Any type 1 $20 liberty in AU-58 and above are anything but "common dates". The type 3 $20 liberty common dates are a completely different story, and I purchased a PCGS MS-61 for not much above melt.

Quote: Ohhh, type 1. That makes sense then. Yeah, I just completed the "No Motto" portion of my gold type set. Though Type 2 and 3 are much easier to find nice examples cheap, unfortunately they both have Mottos, so it wouldn't be a proper fit.

I' love to get rid of some of my newer gold and get some nice mid 19th century examples such as yours. Great Coin!

My next big goal, which probably won't be fulfilled in a while, is to get a pre-1834 capped or draped bust half eagle. That's when you really start running into rarities!
