I have sent many of my father's silver dollars off to be graded and discovered he was rooked. A good percentage of coins he thought were BU had been cleaned or were deemed Damage or Toolings.

I had them slabbed anyway.

When I sell these guys on ebay, what would be better, leave them in the slab, or take them out and clearly explain in the description what the coin's imperfection is?

I would keep them as they are. Too many people buying plastic. Any informed person could probably figure out the boo-boos.

agreed... Plus the recipients have no room to say they didn't know about the coins...

When did he buy them? If he did recently and paid BU prices, maybe he did. If he bought them a long time ago, chances are he did not because the prices likely went way up.

He bought most of his coins in the 70's and 80's. We kept pretty good records. My favorite is a Proof-like "Diving Goose" Canadian Dollar that was $125 and now worth about $3000. Many were labeled GEM-BU, but came back from PCGS as cleaned.

He collected Canadian coins and I collect US. Our collections are now merged. I am selling off many of the Canadian coins.

I have learned a lot from you guys on this form. I can tell now when there are cleaning scratches. Often they show up when I photograph the coin but are not apparent under my Loupe.

Chances are then that he made a lot of money on the draped busts though, because those are worth vastly more now than in the 70s. Or maybe I'm wrong. Can you list how much he paid for a few of the US coins?
