Hello I have a question. My husband bought a Peace dollar at his work. (someone needed cigs bad I guess) I know he riped the guy off because it is silver and he paid face value for it $1. But what I am wondering is are they worth anything (besides a $1) and how do you tell what the mint is? it is a 1924 Thanks

That all depends on the condition and the mint. The 1924-S is worth substantially more in better grades (MS)than the 1924 with no mint mark. You can find the mint mark on the reverse under the word "One". It will either be an "s" or nothing, as there were no 1924-D's made.

Like has been said here before, a picture is worth a thousand words, especially with coins.

The short answer is yes, your coin is worth far more than the face value of $1.00. Your Peace dollar contains approximately 3/4 ounce of silver. At the close price of silver recently, that would place your coin at a minimum value of $8.00.

Its certainly worth more than a dollar. How much more depends on the condition. If you could post a picture, that would be helpful.
And welcome to the CC forums.

Well, you got a great deal no matter how you look at it. It's silver content is greater than a dollar. There's no real way to tell it's collector's value until a picture of the coin is seen, as has already been stated before.

The pics are too small to figure out a condition grade or see a mint mark. Could you make them bigger please?
Rest in Peace

chancyprowell, Welcome to the forum.

The silver content makes the coin worth eight times face value in metal alone. Also, if you don't have a Peace dollar in your collection, it is valuable from a numismatic standpoint.

Welcome to the forum. I can't see the pics well enough but it should be worth at least $10.

Why did this person sell it for a dollar? Why didn't he just spend it?

Please post larger pics. I tried to see if I could enlarge the ones you posted, but they are way too small. If you are having trouble with this, please just email the images to me at susan@coincommunity.com and I'll crop, resize, and upload them to the forum for you.

tonight found a 1963 canadian nickel. Also found 2 older nickels, a 1941 and a 1943 with a P at the top of the tails side. Can anyone tell me what this means? I know have a 43 and 44 nickel with Ps on top. Also got ANOTHER 1956d wheatie.

Those are nice finds. The P above the dome means the coin was minted in Philadelphia. Any nickels from the 40's with a P,S, or D above the dome are 35% silver. (S for San Francisco, D for Denver) Using the bullion table in the RedBook, if silver is at 9 dollars an ounce, (that's the highest my RedBook table goes) your mintmarked nickels are worth at least 50 cents each. I think silver is higher than that now though, so they're probably worth more.

Usually, for posting finds from circulation, this thread would be the one to use:
