Is it just me being to fussy? After kicking around here on the forum, I come to realize how not to treat coins (I have a tough time dropping change in my pocket without thinking twice) Today, at the flea market, while looking through some Peace dollars, the dealer asked if I needed a 1928. So... He pulls it out of the case (in a 2x2) and tossed (yes tossed) it across the table onto the display case plexiglass cover. I asked about his asking price which was 400.00. even if I had the $$$ to spend, I doubt I would have purchased it. I felt the certain disregard for the coin coupled with what I felt was a bad price for the grade of the coin (my limited opinion) just threw the red flag in the air. On a side note about the flea market dealers. Since there are very few coin shows in my area (that I know of) and there is a flea market every day of the week and upwards to at least 10 on Sundays, some dealers set op at the flea markets on a regular basis as opposed to a store front shop

Yes...but flipping that particular coin at that time is what would give that specific coin it's value, not detract from it. Also...Hello...Grass (ok maybe astroturf)

I agree with what you are saying. I like coin hunting at the flea markets though. have found some really good deals there. Have found some way over inflated prices as well.

mrwisker- I totally understand how you feel. Often actions such as the one you described indicates that the person does not truly love coins, rather he loves to make money. So the attitude of a dealer really is a wonderful indicator as to how trustworthy s/he is.

Hello?
You have flea markets EVERY day and at LEAST 10 every Sunday and you don't have any coin shows.
That's hilarious. Can you give your coordinates? I think someone can fill you in on shows in your area! You might have to travel 30 miles, but compared to what you're talking about?
I don't have any coin shows AND I don't have flea markets.

I live in Pa. about half way in between NYC and Philadelphia. I'm sure there are coin shows around, but I'm not in that loop yet to find one every week. Now...train shows, that's a different story. Those I can find real easy. If I ventured out to the 100 mile range, I'm sure the Flea market radius will increase greatly, as well as the coin show number

I met a dealer at a flea market. I regret doing so... He was smoking cigarettes around his open coins and every coin was overpriced or hideously damaged.

Personally no big deal to me. I would have examined the coin and if it was something I would add to my collection, I would have made an offer. Is that how you treat a ($400?) coin, absolutely not! But it was his coin he was damaging, when it becomes mine- I got a big problem with that. I'm sure he's in it for the money, don't see any other reason he would set up at a flea market. Would I visit him/her again? Sure I would, unless every $200 coin they have is selling for $400. Sure wish I had more flea markets to attend. Only have one and it's open once a month with only 2 coin vendors. Only have two store front shops in my area, one is more interested in selling guns than coins and the other won't allow you to look his coins. He wants you to tell him what you want and he pulls it out and shows it to you. Could not even begin to tell you how many coins I have purchased that I was not looking for. Rarely go to these shops.

Flea markets every day? And 10 on Sundays? Just how many dealers are there at those? If that many I'm surprized the authorities haven't investigated yet. We usually have flea markets on the weekends and some get raided every year by the police. Of course we do have a coin show every Sunday for the first 4 Sundays of the Month too. I guess I'm lucky since we also have gun shows, card shows, train shows, cat and/or dog shows, computer shows, Taste of Chicago and on and on and on. Our flea markets are short on coin dealers due to all the coin shows though and the ones that are there are usually not the best ones to buy coins from. It is odd about the dropping of coins since on some forums you hear people say that is the test for finding out if a coin is Silver or not. Possibly by a non coin collector.

Why would they be raided or investigated? All the feas aruond me (depending on the date and weather) range from 20-30 dealers up to hundreds. Some are connected to auctions happening at te same time. Except for the occasional movie pirating, most are fairly legit. They all police themselves, most of the owners of te markets don't want to jeoperdize their cash cows to let to much go on

Fleamarkets are notorious fronts for organized crime. Need a hitman/fix/prostitute/etc just walk around and ask the beefy Italian guys about the merchandise "behind the table". Be sure to wink in a conspiratorial way.
hehehehe
Nah, just yankin yer chain but the cops probably would be looking for things like designer handbag ripoffs and such.
