Trying to identify a coin with VN Balboa imprinted in semi circle above the image on the obverse and an old sailing ship on the reverse. There is no date of mint or country shown on either side. Gold in color and about the size of a US quarter.
Panama is the only country that has balboa as currency. But I don't believe there is a coin matching your description. There hasn't been a gold un balboa. Usually, if it's the size of a US quarter then it's un quarto de balboa. And all coins say Republica de Panama. Must be a medallion.
How odd--one of those was just found in Tidewater Virginia and brought to a Dept. of Historic Resources staff member for identification. It is the central pendant of a 1931 faux Panamanian coin costume jewelry necklace. The rest of the faux coins on the necklace were a standard smaller size and had the country seal on the reverse. Only the quarter size one had the ship and was attached to the necklace so the ship faced out. The necklace may have been designed to commemorate/celebrate Charles Lindburgh's 1930 inauguration of an airmail route to the Panama Canal Zone, but that is speculation on my part.
My first post here, will go intro myself next. Five and a half years later - just found one of these in my old jewelry, hope I can still post to an old thread and satisfy any curiosity :
