The ratio is supposed to be 97 to 1, magnetic to non-magnetic. I don't know how many 2007 Canadian cents I've seen, but I doubt it is anywhere close to 100. So I have no problem believing that there could be 9 million in circulation.

I guess my real question is: What is Charlton's source?

Since the 9,625,000 number is identical to what's in the RCM report under zinc production IN 2007 (not DATED 2007), I can only assume they misinterpreted the RCM report.

I have been meaning to write to them and ask, and curiosity is finally getting the best of me.

Like I said in the first post in this thread, I had 10 rolls of 2007 and not a single non-magnetic. I have yet to find one in over 15 boxes. I'm with bibd; I have a big problem with that 9 million figure.

Maybe I should go to Newfoundland or Michigan to try to get one of these things.

Well, yes, distribution can be a strange thing sometimes. It took forever for me to find a 2009 non-magnetic, when others were finding them easily.

To re-clarify what I was saying about the 9 million -- the report lists composition by production year, and in a separate table lists coin dates by production year. The overlap of zinc and 2007 date could be miniscule. Or, Charlton has an inside track and there's 9 million sitting up in a vault in Nunavut somewhere! :)

Bibd - I'll write the letter to the RCM seeking clarification. You go to Nunavut and look for this vault!

Nunavut: Hey, that might be fun, actually!

By the way, our friend malibu here on CCF already asked at the Winnipeg RCM in person, and they said no zinc 2007-dated cents were issued. (That's obviously wrong, but I suspected the employee meant for circulation.)

bibd: who knows, your questioning may lead to a correction. Sometimes I forget that our main coin reference book was written by a Charlton. If you ever get a correction or confirmation, please post. Trust me, I hope there are less than 9 million as it would make mine rarer. Good luck!

Hi bibd,
I just sent 20 PL 1 cents all different dates to ICCS to be certified.I cut them out of the pliofilm and put them all in 2X2 hoping that Brian would make a mistake and grade a few MS instead of NBU.No such luck, they all came back as NBU.

I have only found 2 since the year 2007 in circulation in Vancouver,Canada. That makes me believe that they are not common or not common in my area?

Wow 20/20 -- OK I'm a believer now. I don't like the NBU designation, but he knows his stuff.

I have found ZERO 2007(non-mag.)
They must be extremely rare.In the last year I have searched 50,000+ pennies. (I JUST SHOCKED MYSELF)after figuring out how many rolls I've been through.

Sigh. I was hoping for a definitive "NO". Instead, like a fool, I keep checking each 2007 cent I find to test for magnetism.

The meeting will take place in Saint Jogn, New Brunswick, with :

Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO
Marc Brūle, Vice-President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer
Patrick Hadsipantelis, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications
The Mint's annual public meeting will also be webcast on www.mint.ca

For further information: Christine Aquino, Director, Communications, Royal Canadian Mint, (613) 993-9999, aquino@monnaie.ca

bibd, there's a good contact for you to try to ask about production figures and metals. I'd like to know if they mint foreign coins in zinc and is it possible they throw the left overs into Cdn cent production. Or vice-versa?

Is anyone going to St-John? I'll be in the Miramachie NB area this weekend but I'm not allowed (wife's orders) to sneak away to SJ.

Could somebody check out this RCM meeting and try to ask about zinc production? Or ask if we can rely on Charlton figures, i.e. when they quote 9.6 million zinc cents for 2007 is it an assumption or a RCM confirmed fact?

Great idea malibu, I second this. It's looking more an dmore like I'm going to try to find someone with this coin and the 2007 dime variety who will sell them both.
