I'm using a 7.1MP Kodak... I use the macro (flower) mode, a desktop tripod, and the timer.. sadly steady hands aren't enough
- lighting is also something to consider

best thing I can advise is practice, I still take a bunch of junky pics !

you can also check out the photography section on here, there's a lot of wonderful advise posted out there

You need to use Macro mode. That is for focusing at a close distance. There should be an icon on the controls that looks like a flower. That's what most of them use to indicate Macro mode. Your instruction manual, assuming you have one, would show you how to put the camera in Macro mode. And it works best with the camera mounted, like on a tripod, to hold it steady.

Hope this helps,

Steve

This is my set up.

The results are something like this:

I mostly use a black velvet background and daylight corrected florescent bulbs. I often shoot with aperture priority to force a nice sharp f8. Also I set the camera timer for 2 seconds so when the camera triggers I am not touching it and creating blur

The Camera is a Canon XSi, but I can get the same results from my Panasonic Point and Shoot. BTW - if your shopping for a point and shoot there are none better than the Panasonic Lumix with the Leica lenses. Its a great line of cameras.
