I got this piece from an inherited collection.
My question is, how pronounced is the reeding on a 1936
If I am correct, the 36 pieces have reeded and non reeded edges.

This particular coin has very light visible reeding as well as edge printing.

If you have one of the 1200 or so reeded edge 1836 CBHs, there will be no lettering on the edge, just reeding like on modern quarters and half dollars, etc.

I haven't seen any documentation anywhere about any 1836 CBHs that had both reeding and letters.

There are only 1200 reeded edge 1836 known, but they have the 50 Cents reverse. Yours has the normal 1836 reverse 50 C.. Can you take a picture of the reeding? My guess is that it was added to make it look like the rarer type.

Good point Echizento! MrWisker, your 1836 CBH reverse (if reeded) would look like this:

I will get pics if I can get them to come out. (tried once so far)
Given the info above, I can say it is not a reeded edge. (one can hope though)
This coin belonged to my Grandfather, and He passed away back in 1980.
He most likely got it in change somewhere.
He was more the opportunistic collector not specifically a coin collector.

I was looking at my 2010 RedBook, page 190

It shows a picture of "Adopted edge 1830 - 1836"

The picture looks like there is light reeding between the letters.

Sounds like some individual was trying at one time to make a quick profit by adding some reeding to a lettered edge half without doing even enough research to note the change in reverse design.

Overton Third edition pg 473 par 4 sentences 6 - 8

Three new experimental edge designs were added in 1830. These edge designs all kept the "normal" edge but added grooved lines between all the letters. The lines are veritcal, sloped left, and sloped right.

Pg 497 par 3 sentence 1, 2

The experimental edge dies used in 1830 continued in 1831. the vertical reeding or grooves appears with regularity throughout the year.

Pg 517 par 4 sentence 4

The edge design for the 1832 half dollar generally standardized with the vertical reeding between the words FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR and a star between DOLLAR and FIFTY.

Pg 543 par 3 last sentence

The edges of 1833 half dollars usually only show slight traces of the vertical reeding in contrast to 1831 and 1832 with more distinct reeding.

There is no further mention of the edges in Overton for 1834, 35, or 36. I would assume that after the experiments carried out in 1830, 31, and 32 they settled on the edge described for 1833 for the rest of the series. This edge seems to match the description given of the OP's 1836 half.
