Anyone else helped any new collectors into the hobby? I started my 6 year old granddaughter a few months ago she was so fasinated with papas coins. I gave her a 1800 large cent( Very Fine condition) I know I can hear the gasps already. But she absoluty loves it and has it in a protective holder. And knows to be extremly careful with it as it is very old. Now my son tells me she gets angry with him because she cannot get any BIG PENNIES(as she calls them) in change. But she does have a nice Lincoln Cent collection she has collected by herself from pocket change dates 1980-2006 and only missing a few mint marks. I am so very proud of her as she has done this all by herself and calls me every time she finds a new one. It is enthusiasm like that, that makes the hobby so great and hopefully she will always have that. I will do my very best to teach her the different aspects of the hobby when she gets older but for now it puts such a smile on my face to hear about a new penny she has found.

I tried to get my sons interested. My youngest acted interested for a while, but then decided that coin collecting was not for him. They both have friends who collect, though, so I can at least enjoy sharing some knowledge with their friends.

My grandfather collects/hoards hundreds of thousands of coins. However, I've never really seen him in my life. Nobody else in my family collects coins (my parents think I'm crazy when I spend $100 on a coin). So, I guess that I just caught the coin collecting bug somewhere. Maybe coin collectors are just born, not made.

Hi dinosaur
The staff has talked about a Mentoring program of some sort here on the forum,,
I,we believe that the new collector and the YN's could benefit from such a program.
Its very rewarding to help someone who is just beginning to collect.

That is so wonderful dinosaur that you and your Granddaughter are sharing coin collecting together. It sounds like she'll stick with it! That's about the age my Mother started me. I left the "hobby" for a while in my teenage years but, am thoroughly involved again now a few (tee hee) years later and have incorporated my Mom's coins into my collection (or the other way around). I don't tell my Father what I spend on each coin. He would probably keel over if he knew, especially when 1 little Indian Head penny was close to $200! He'll really faint when I buy the key dates. I'm still searching for a nice 1877! Thank you for sharing your story with all of us. It's inspirational and has a big ahhhhhhh factor!

Would like to get my kids interested in it but the only part they will have of it is spending it.

Our three children are collectors, and to a certain degree, so are our six grandkids.
We stimulate their interest from time to time with gifts of coins we feel they will like.

I intend to really get my son involved in my collecting when he's old enough to really enjoy what it's all about.Of coarse I've started 2 sets just for him already. And if he never does get interested in coins,he sure is going to be stuck with alot of them. That's nice what you did for your granddaughter Dinasaur :) Welcome to the forum.sn31.
