Please can you tell us more about the mule 20c. coin? I hear that there was a $2 coin that was muled with the obverse of the 5c. coin a few years ago.Does anyone know of this coin?
Aidan.

all I know is that a 2005 dated 20 cent piece made its way into a 2006 proof set , as for how many are out there we must sit and wait for more to turn up if they exist

PNC is correct in a sence. It appears some 2006 Proof Sets so far number unknown but one set has been verified, has a Proof 20 cents dated 2005 with a Platypus reverse. All 2005 Proof 20 cent coins for the 2005 Proof Set had a commemorative reverse for the 60th anniversary of the end of World War 2. The 2006 dated Proof 20 cents has the Platypus reverse. So it appears there was a mismatching of dies - 2006 reverse and 2005 obverse. The Royal Australian Mint was unaware this error had occurred until an Adelaide person who bought the set off ebay from a Brisbane coin dealer, contacted them about it. The set was sold privately to another Adelaide collector for a large sum. This is the second mule coin to appear in 2006 Proof sets. Early this year it was revealled a number of sets thought to be no more than 40 and possibly less than 30 had a Proof 2005 dated Mob of Kangaroos $1. Just as for the 20 cent, the 2005 proof dollar in 2005 Proof sets had a commemorative reverse while the 2006 Proof dollar in 2006 Proof sets had the Mob of Roos. Three sets have been offered on ebay so far all fetching over AUS$3,050. One ended today for AUS$3,050. The Mint knew about this error and tried to pull any error sets but as we know now some got out - around 5 went to same Brisbane dealer, around 20 went to Downies in Melbourne and possibly another 1 went to Sydney. It was discovered when a customer returned an error set to Downies wanting a replacement. Downies then sold the proof sets for just under AUS$2,000 each. Issue price on a normal set was $95. Now as for any $2/5cent mules, it is untrue. There has not been any years that produced a mule. Some have rim errors or similar that give the impression of a double rim. Comparison of the obverse's head of Queen Elizabeth II with that of a normal $2 show they are the same size and with a 5 cent obverse that it is larger. Australia's decimal mules are listed elsewhere in this Forum under World Coins.

There has never been reported a mule like that. There have been $2 of various years that have a mule look edge but never a mule I have had listings but must stress it is not a mule its an offcentre struck with a mule look a like rim.

I feel it my duty to let any new error collectors here know there is no such thing as a mule edge or mule look edge. These coins are not even off centre strikes, they are very common offset dies. For face value plus post I could supply the whole forum with 1 each in a day of looking.

SS You have to be right with everything you say as If I list something and someone wants to pay over the odds for it its between myself the buyer and the taxman..yes I pay taxes on my sales..dont sell mules for a tax free profit...I value my clients and If they are not happy I do everything to comfort them. As you know I was one of your clients but you grab my money then down the track shut the door and never open it again after knocking on your door many times.... the lights are on but pretend that no one is home. Due to ebay word spamming I had no choice to describe my item in such way.As I'm still awaiting on your replies as after sending you a number of emails as I thought you were a gentleman but seems your just cold hearted as what you can do to me it sets a perfect example what you can do to others. Not insulting you just gently placing my cards on the table

Obviously you didnt email my yahoo adderess as forum members have known to do for months. I dont see what my sales to you have got to do with this forum but for the books I only ever sold genuine mules and have never used the term mule in a listing for anything but. Unfortunately I had little choice either. My apologies to this forum, I was just making a valid point about these coins. A coin is either a mule or its not, no inbetweens, no look alikes etc.

Please let me apologise for getting back on topic.
A 2006 set containing 2005 platypus 20c sold yesterday fro $3900. This is a reasonable price considering that a 1988 50c with coast of arms reverse sold at an IAG aucion a few weeks ago for $5400. I'd consider the 1988 50c a much more desirable coin as there are only a few known in any form whereas there are millions of circulation issue 2005 platypus 20c.

Ah, but what you omitted to say was that there are no other PROOF issues of the 2005 Platypus 20c as all 2005 Proof Sets contain the 2005 dated proof 60th Anniv. of End of WW2 commemorative 20c and all other 2006 Proof sets contain a 2006 dated proof Platypus 20c. A proof coin and a circulation coin even with same date and design are not the same coins. Also one is a mule and the other was not.
