Can't answer your question, but I'd like to say that I'm surprised that the seller didn't provide a larger picture of just the 20C, especially given how much money he's asking for it.

The date does look like 2005 to me. I think he's probably accurately describing the set; I just think he should have taken the time to post a larger pic of just the 20c.
Is it possible that he opened the holder and inserted this coin? According to his description, the playpus coin was never done in proof, so this would still be a rarity.

I just looked on ebay and it looks like all of the 2006 sets have the proof Platypus 20C. The other auctions are using stock photos, so the date side is not visible. Perhaps all of the sets had the 2005 20C? |

it seems unusual that the mint firstly put the wrong dated dollar coin in a few sets and now it seems the wrong date 20 cents has made it into a proof set , to me it seems it was done on purpose by some one with a lot to gain

Only 50% correct. Item has indeed been removed as has ebay seller's registration as someone complained. But I have heard that the actual item has been viewed and it is genuine. |

The removal of of the auction from ebay has cause a bit of a furore. As I understand it, an Aussie forum member complained about it not being genuine, the seller copped it in the neck. And all the while the item was genuine and has subsequently been sold. A picture of the coin was posted on the Aussie forum. I'd like to hear more about this one. |

Yes indeed. The set is genuine and does have a proof "mule" 20 cents dated 2005 with Platypus reverse while all other denominations are 2006. Seems the RAM were not even aware of this error they made by mismatching the 2005 proof obverse with the 2006 proof reverse. It is my understanding the set will be taken to the RAM for verification and hopefully get some document of authenticity. To understand how this and the proof 2005 Mob of Roos $1 in 2006 Proof set came about you need to understand the pressure the RAM was under around September-October 2005. Not only had they been producing the commemorative 2005 Proof sets they were also producing the 2006 Proof sets which were to be released in November 2005. At the same time they had the extensive Commonwealth Games coin program and were leading up to refurbishment of large areas of the Mint which would interrupt most of the coin production for quite some time. So it is not too difficult to see how mistakes occurred just as happen in 2000 when the $1/10c mule was manufactured during the large Olympic Coin Program and the Centenary of Federation Program. The big question now is how many proof 20c mules were struck and found their way into 2006 Proof sets? Lets not bag the RAM for making Australian decimal coin collecting so interesting. [:p]  |

I dout if it will be the only one. The fact that the RAM appeared not to know about it would suggest that a run of the mismatched dies went undetected or at least unreported so coins would have gone into sets. However, because this has not hit the Media for all to know, it may take years for error sets to surface as collectors and ordinary citizens that purshased the 2006 Proof set as a keep sake do not always look at the detail on the coins such as dates or even open sets up. PRA reported hearing of another possible set but that has not been confirmed. |
