Here is the deal: 90% US Silver Coins Pre 1965 - $1 Face Value Lots $13.00 They say that the coins will be random but could include Mercury dimes, half dollars, etc. Is this a good deal and how would you evaluate it? Is my logic correct that to know if it is a good deal, I would need to know which coins because a half dollar would have more silver content then 5 mercury's yes? I would like to hear anyones opinion on this deal. Thanks. John Edited by johnstac 07/15/2010 2:24 pm

$1 has the same silver content as 4 quarters or 10 dimes, otherwise there would be arbitrage. 13x face is ok for buying right now.

That would be okay if all 90%, and no 40% or WWII 35% nickels.
10 silver dimes = 4 silver quarter = 2 silver 90% halves = 1 90% silver dollar.
They all have the same total silver content.

i'd buy at 13x face. i'd prefer to know what exactly I was buying, but i'd risk $13 to try it.

13 times face is a pretty fair price right now. I work in a coin store and we sell at about 13.5 right now

That's not a bad deal considering that a silver $1 in any form has about .75 oz of silver. At $18 spot, you would underpaying for the silver content at $13.00 per $1.00 face.

Silver dollars actually have a little more silver than halves and under. There are .7735 Toz of silver in a silver dollar. There were .7234 Toz of silver in 2 halves, 4 quarters or 10 dimes. Due to wear, that amount is rounded down to .715 Toz.
So if there are silver dollars in the lot, the deal is even better.
There's another site I have bookmarked (not sure if I can mention it so I won't) that is selling $10.00 FV for $176.46 or $17.47/$1.00. Even their $1,000.00 FV bag is selling for $15.99/$1.00. So if you are getting it for $13.00/$1.00 on small lots, that's a real good deal.

As StJoeBlues noted, silver dollars have significantly more silver in them than the other denominations. Silver dollars usually carry a numismatic premium as well, regardless of condition.
When referring to 90% junk silver, it is dimes, quarters and halves only and they all contain the same amount of silver per face value. The deal sounds pretty good but I still like to see photos. $1 in heavily worn "slicks" would cause me to pass on it.
