coinsnpaper Valued Member Canada 480 Posts	Posted 07/16/2010 12:28 am Damage done before the coin was struck- when the strips was being made, the metal is folded over itself, and some gas became trapped inside the metal. As the strips were made thinner and thinner, the gas came close to the surface. Eventually the metal broke, releasing the gas, and leaving the result you see. It is a quality control mistake, not damage after the coin was made. Report this Post to the Staff
