I began to wonder about this last night. My daughter and I can go through a couple of boxes of Lincolns in one night easy. I bought a box of coin wrappers for around $21. I think it has a thousand wrappers in it. We've been using new ones to re-wrap with. But I did see this person on youtube who is able to open the original bank wrapper and reuse it. He takes all of the 50 coins out in his hand and then checks them for copper. He then refills the wrapper, adding additional coins as necessary. Okay, so it's only 2 cents a wrapper. It still adds up. I've personally tried using the same wrapper. Maybe my fingers are too big or it could be that I have no nails to pick one end open with. Even when I use something to pry one end open, I cant get the pennies out of the damm wrapper anyway unless I shove a screwdriver on the other end which then results in pennies all over the place! Does anyone actually do this? How long did it take to master and how much extra time does it take?

I dunno I think it would take too much time to carefully unroll a machined roll of pennies. Maybe with practice you could get good at it? It's better for me just to crack it open by smashing it on the edge of the table. I like to think that the time I save by doing it that way makes up for the small expense of buying wrappers.

I have the most success by tearing each end and then just unroll the paper to expose the pennies. But there again, .02 down the drain! :)

I do the same as johnstac, tear each end and pull the wrapper open. As far as wrappers to reroll, I get them free at the bank. They will give you a large handfull at a time. Just ask for some everytime you go to the bank.

I found a bank with a coin counter in the lobby. I opened a savings account and just pour the coins through the machine. No rerolling needed.

i only had trouble a few times with string and son wrappers but still salvaged them all most of my coins are all just fold over wrappers so its very easy and I ALWAYS reuse them unless I get clear wrapped coins then I ask at a bank or take some from the piles I have from work. Each time I open change in my register I save the wrappers

I get free wrappers, even from banks where I don't have accounts.

We reuse customer wraps, but not the plastic ones or the rolled-end ones. The bank where we get our coins gives us free wrappers any time we ask for them.

Wow, I never thought to ask the banks for free wrappers! And Ziggy, that is even one better. I wouldn't even have to reroll my coin. I think I would open a savings account just for that feature alone!!!

Before I found a coin counting machine I would use the paper rolls that the coin came in. It worked for me!

Well..... "my" bank asked me to STOP rolling them YEARS AGO ! They said it makes them more difficult to count them.....and that they just have to open them anyway. So, for years, I've just brought them in in overly-large ziplock baggies or plastic containers. Then they take them and dump them into the counter machine for their accurate count. Simple. You might check your bank and see if this isn't the case too. This would save you A LOT OF TIME and even a little extra money !

When I used to re-roll I'd get free wrappers from the bank. They hand them out like candy, you just have to ask. Now I just dump my searched cents into a coin machine at my bank. It's a free service and it saves me hours!

I haven't had a lot of luck getting pennies back in the wrappers, it is just more effort that it is worth. Half-Dollars though are pretty easy to unroll one end of the wrapper than slide the coins back in.

In my area, Chase bank only takes rolled coins, Wells Fargo only takes unrolled. Crazy, huh?
