Poll Question
I think that Congress and the Mint should discontinue the Kennedy half, once we've reached the 50th anniversary of it's first year minted (also the 50th anniversary of his death). And, I think this "last coin" should be 90% Silver just like the first coin --- 1964. I realize that they have been N.I.F.C. for some time now.......but I think it's just time to "end this run", and make this coin a keepsake that isn't minted anymore p.e.r.i.o.d.The "50th" would be in in just a few short years from now.... Maybe even have some kind of "Coin & Chronicle Set" or a "Legacy Set" as well marking the end of this. I, of course have heard absolutely NOTHING in regards to this ever actually happening, but, I thought it "Poll Worthy" to see what others thoughts were.

The Half-Dollar has no prospects to return as a business strike coin. The average young person today has never even seen a Kennedy Half-Dollar. I agree, 2014 would be the perfect time to end this series. It definitely would deserve a special Commemorative Set to mark the occasion. How about a JFK Coin & Chronicles Set with an exclusive JFK Silver Dollar, done like the Half-Dollar, but 38mm diameter and denominated "One Dollar" on the reverse?

I'd be happy to end all the presidential and historical figure obverses. Then maybe we could go back to more aesthetic designs on coins.
I guess your post has more to do with ending the half dollar than what's on it though. I'd be fine with that. They also need to decide what to do with dollars too. Either phase out paper dollars and force everyone to use dollar coins, or get rid of dollar coins.

I think that there should be a half dollar that circulates, but it should not be of the current design and size. In fact, I think that it should be reduced in size and made of the same composition as the Canadian Loonie so that it is easily distinguishable from other circulating coinage. As for the design, eh... we need something new and imaginative.

I think we need to start another 10 year commemorative design series. Maybe like six halves a year depicting all the major city's in America. I hope you know I'm kidding.

I think it's time to redesign the half dollar. After 50 years it's time for something totally new.

Archraz: the US has stopped using anything near pure nickel for a long long time.. the loonie has lots of nickel and bronze so I doubt that highly, plus it would be confused with the Sacagawea dollar. It think the problem is that the US has had SO many incarnations of the dollar coin that there is no uniformity and only a handful of citizens hae even seen the coins we discuss in these forums. Let's see, there's the Morgan, Peace, Trade, Ike, Susan B Anthony, Sacagawea.... Too many in the last century alone. Honestly, I don't see how convenient it is to carry a load of $1 bills. Maybe it makes you feel richer, I can't know, but it's no wonder the bills last only a few years before being replaced.

Ronald Reagan would be a good choice for a new obverse but keep the reverse. I totally love that reverse.

Now that we have finally rid ourselves of Kennedy's from Washington, for now anyways, I say end it also. The half dollar had a good run in it's day, but I do not think casinos use them any more.

I have ordered the Dansco Kennedy album...with Proofs. I have high hopes that this program will end at the "50 year mark, Which is coming up very soon. I believe (or hope) that the series will have a "future attraction" once it's been gone for awhile. This has "not" been the case for series like the "Ike" I know.....but I think this one could be different. I think the future of this Kennedy half could potentially attain a much higher " collector desire"....once it's permanently gone. I read that there would be over 100 coins in a complete Kennedy collection, so it's a far cry from being a "short Set" indeed, but still could be put together for under $1,000.00, and I'm going to embark on this endeavor of putting together the complete Set.

Casino's still use them at the Blackjack tables where they are used in payoffs of "21"..example, player bets $5, the payout is $7.50.
Ending the Kennedy feature at 50 would be the logical choice of when. The question of whether or not there is a need to continue to make this denomination at all would remain though. If they did keep it, I'm all for a more artistic design and not another dead President or historical figure. Something symbolic of liberty, freedom, etc., and that ties into other historical coinage would be fine.

The Mint makes more seignorage stamping out a Kennedy half than a Washington quarter. I don't understand why they don't cut down their quarter production by half, thus creating a shortage of quarters whose only solution could be rectified by re-circulating the half dollar. I'm quite fond of the denomination myself and wouldn't like to see it go.

Quote: I don't understand why they don't cut down their quarter production by half, thus creating a shortage of quarters I heard that they " did" do this with the D.C. & Territory Qtrs. (not by "half" but considerably less than many previous years). And I heard that "Quarter" production could continue to fall and maybe even compare to the "Nickel & Dime" production levels of 2009 (which will probably happen again for this year with those). Which also means that these new Parks Qtrs. will be EVEN HARDER TO FIND THAN WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE ! (in addition to the change in the way banks will ( not) be able to order them the same way as they did with the State Qtrs.) Put a "low mintage" on these Parks Qtrs. coupled with that.....and good luck finding any decent specimens "in the wild"..... The bad economy = less coinage production sometimes.Of course other times, when certain coins are "hard to find", it just means that no banks are ordering them and they are sitting in Fed. Resv. vaults for years, then will slowly trickle out when the economy begins to improve. Regardless..... I wouldn't want to see a "re-design" of a .50 Cent piece, when the reason and deciding factor that it was pulled out of "circulation" was because of little use or interest by the public, only to be trotted back out again with a re-design that would prove to come to the same end. Meaning.... nobody uses them or wants them in their pockets. But we all know too, that these days, if the Mint will make enough money on it...they'll probably do it ! ....

I agree the Kennedy half has become rather obsolete. You don't even see older ones circulated anymore. Casinos have an abundance of them, but other than that, nada.
