I was checking out freebay tonight and found the lowest price for a roll of 2009 nickels is $11.29 and that's only if you buy the entire box of 20 rolls for $549.95. Oh and then you have to pay shipping on top of that. Many times the price is much higher after shipping.

So this comes out to 55 cents each for every nickel. Is this insane? Perhaps not. At first I was angry but that's really only because I don't have any! My real question is this; If my daughter and I find 2009 nickels in MS condition as we search nickel rolls, have we actually found a coin that is worth 55 cents? It is laughable because we most often spend time looking for wheat pennies, and when we find one, we run to the Red Book and find they usually worth about 20 cents. Those are coins over 60 years old!

Is this nickel worth 55 cents or is it the latest thing? Is it right up there with the tamagotchi and the newest hot wheel? Will this wear off if I give it time or is buying this nickel now the smart thing to do?

It's just that some people are willing to pay that much for a unsearched new roll of coins. Soon they will only be worth .05.

People seem to have a lot of anxiety and impatience with new coins.
Historically periods of economic depression are the times when rarer coins are born, and mintages for dimes and nickels are much lower than usual, but not so low as to warrant the prices you mention(IMHO).

If people are still paying those prices, then they aren't circulating enough of them. The 2009 nickels have been out since April,2009.

As far as those Wheaties go, despite the " RedBook" listings....those prices are generally viewed as very high for most coins listed therein. It's "not" a good "price guide", it does however have a wealth of other coin information which is quite valuable for every collector.

Most common date/average condition Wheat Cents are worth .03 - .05 Cents apiece, and that's all. ('30's, '40's, and '50's are considered "common". Yes, even those that are 80 years old now are still considered "common" ! ....

As far as the Nickels for '09, in my opinion, it's viewed by many as a "modern" low mintage. In other words, certainly NOT low by Classic coin standards, but in "modern" terms only.
So, the fact that most collectors don't have or can't acquire them, the premium goes up. It's the "demand" or "desire" really, that warrants these premiums. It may or may not be sustainable long term, but folks just "want" them....moreso that they're so hard to get !
Finding both P's and D's in excellent condition in a business strike, ISN'T very easy with most any coin anyway.....put a low mintage on it....and there ya go.

The box on ebay gets a premium over ones found in mixed rolls because they are all uncirculated and unsearched for errors. It will probably go to a dealer who will sell the individual rolls for even more.
