I've got a guy offering 680 40% kennedy's for $2600. that's about 7.6 x face, I think...this still seems high. what's a reasonable counter offer?
they're all circulated, no culls, nothing amazingly MS either. Edited by jedichef 07/18/2010 8:33 pm

I just sold 200 for $470 shipped ($2.35 each) which would make 680 around $1600 Its better than Kitco were paying at the time. They were the same grade range.

that is 3.82 a half dollar I was told that they usually go for no more then 2.50 a piece and that they are harder to get rid of and thats why some people don't even pull them out of circulation IDK thats what I was told, but I could be really wrong, anyone else

When selling I usually sell for 90-95% of melt. I don't buy them. I feel they are like War Nicks.

I sold 40% to a friend (in person, not on ebay) at approx. 92.5%. That was the halfway point between spot and what the coin store offered, which was approx. 85% of spot.

junk 40% halves should sell at a discount to melt...it's more work to get the silver out of them than a 90% coin.

Yes, they are easy to but... But sometimes hard to unload. You should buy under melt definitely, or look elsewhere.

Admittedly I don't know anything about the refining business, but why are 40% coins supposedly more work to extract silver than the 90%? Isn't the process going to be the same? Or is it simply b/c it's a lower yield that it takes more time than it would to extract the same amount of silver from the 90%. That's probably the real reason, basic economics, but curious of there was a refining reason as well.
