I like to use inexpensive cotton gloves when working on my coins. I have recently been wondering about latex finger cots. They cost a lot less but is latex OK for handling coins? I like to save pennies (US and Canadian) and press them into the Whitman books too -- is it OK to press with latex? I also like old silver US coins -- is latex OK for silver?

Thank you!

Most of the latex gloves have a powder coating to ease fitting to the hand. If there is any particulate, I wouldn't use them. I understand why you're looking for an other way to handle coins. The inexpensive cotton gloves are sometimes not so inexpensive. If you want to keep body oils from the coin, especially a great coin, I think I'd stick with the cotton glove.

I think I'll call PCGS and ask them what they use. Be back in a flash.

I can't imagine how the split second contact of coin to latex is going to hurt. At one time I used finger cots and found the powder used for the inside would get on the coins and make my micro-photographs look dusty.

On the other hand the cotton gloves are more comfortable, and I can wear them longer.

I use a photographer's lens brush to dust my coins now before I photograph them.

Just had my coin collecting world rocked. While waiting for a reply from PCGS on this subject, I watched their "Grading Process Video" narrated by David Hall. If you want to view the video its on the introduction page of their site. Keep in mind that they show only gold coins being graded and gold does not tarnish like silver but they didn't wear any apparent protection while grading or handling the coins. I'm curious to see what they say in their reply to my request for information. I'm probably overprotective of my coins, but then anything over 100 years old deserve a little more consideration. What do the "ancient coin" collectors use? Most of their coins are circulated or worse. I know an archaeologist that wears nothing but non-latex, has an allergy to latex, gloves to avoid oil and particulate transfer.

With cotton, though, it's abrasive enough to scratch a CD/DVD. What about coins?
