I have a question about taking picture of cents. I am having trouble getting the color right. Is it beter to use a different color then white for your back ground or does it make a difference.I thought black might be beter but wasn't sure

Use white, but don't set the white balance on the white background. Use newsprint to set the white balance, overall its close to 17% gray and will make for a nice pic.

Soft diffused light works great for me. I was a professional photographer and found that this gives the most natural effect. Also as Bobby said, do not use total white background. Try a salt and pepper background, sometimes you can get kitchen Formica leftovers that have the right color and usually cost little or nothing.
