OK, guys and gals, I've seen the light (npi) and am now checking out copy stands. While we've discussed them indirectly as part of other topics, I've dedicated this topic to copy stands. Only problem is I have no clue about good buys, bad buys, in-between buys, and so-so buys since there's probably a lot of considerations I haven't considered. Looking in ebay (where else?), I find a fair number of them. Here's one, The Testrite CS-3:

(Except for the shipping price, it looks pretty good; I think the seller confused Express Mail with Priority Mail.

Looks like $50 to $75 is a good planning range.

Experiences, opinions, things to stay away from?

Fred

Try wolf camera, or some other specialized photography store. They should have a large selection. Other than that, I'm as clueless as you.

I was looking at one like this that is a testrite and has the lights attached to it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...keTrack=true and this is a CS-2 with lights http://cgi.ebay.com/CS2-Testrite-Co...nd_W0QQitemZ280041062718QQihZ018QQcategoryZ30088QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This may not be as easy as I thought. With only 11 on ebay, most of them Testrites which seems to make the best copy stands, especially the CS-3 at a reasonable price (there's some other available at $500, $750, etc., but these are overkill). Testrite, however, seems to have dropped out of the copy stand business and most sites which even list Testrite show them as no longer available. The Testrite site itself shows the type of copy stand I think I want in a promotional image, but its products list no longer show copy stands. I have every Testrite and a couple others on ebay on my Watch List, may have to act soon if there's only a finite number available with no guarantee that more will be listed anytime soon.

I'm currently looking, with no real candidate in mind. My criteria are twofold: First, the camera needs to adjust over at least a 12" range, preferably 18", to allow for both Macro and Super Macro operation and to make room for axial lighting if I choose. Second, I want the smallest and most flexible lighting possible. I want to be able to bring both lights close enough to touch the camera, and far enough out to sidelight a coin from no more than 15 degrees above horizontal. That will give me the flexibility to get straight on to really lustrous coins, as well as sidelighting die cracks and errors which are my specialty.

It may be that I'm going to acquire the lighting separately from the camera mount. If required, I'll fabricate a stand for the whole thing.

A guy I saw on the NGC boards fabbed a camera mount from an old drill press. It was cool as all get out.
