Bobby talked a little while back about the stand he uses to make his coins look like they are 'floating'. Based on his description I've just made a little stand to try to accomplish the same effect. It's a thin piece of MDF with a plastic riser with a plastic disc on top of the riser. There's black felt glued to the surface of the board and the disc. With the coin on the disc hopefully the black surface of the board will be well out of the focal plane of the coin and the coin will appear to be floating in a black space. Total cost so far is something of the order of $3 I've got a couple of bugs to iron out (the board is too big to get my camera on the tripod directly above it) and I need better lighting, but here's my first attempt: Edited by markn 10/23/2006 08:14 am

Nice job and the economics sounds good. I may be going the copystand route in the near future, so you've given me another option to think about.

Great Idea! I think this is something I will try. The photo of the coin looks superb. You said you wanted to improve your lighting. What are you going to try? I could use some improvement myself, any help would be appreciated.

Are you using a tripod? Really good idea, btw.

That is a smart idea markn.
Might have a go at it myself.

Yes I use a tripod and my wifes Panasonic FZ20 digital camera. I just have a small halogen desk lamp as lighting. I'd really like to try the glass at 45 degrees lighting technique described in some articles that I've seen. The current lighting I have is very bad for proof coins.

markn, For your proof coins do you think some soft diffused light would work? I have had some luck with that idea, but I still need to learn some more tricks for lighting my regular coins.

Well the 45 degree glass idea does that I gather, gives you a more diffuse light source. Trouble is the stand with glass will be biggish. With small children in my house everything must be able to be put into a desk drawer with 1 minutes notice. I'm still thinking about how to get around this

Would an additional light source from a different angle added to what have help with the shadows?

Yes, another light would help. Or a more diffuse less directional one may help too.
