I know, border line heretical. LOL
I do not understand why the mint still makes these if nobody actually uses them. Do they make THAT much money from selling them to collectors?

Because I like them! It's obviously dead as a useful coin in our current society and has been for some time. I suppose that in the future when pennies and maybe nickels are no longer needed... They should replace the half dollar with a $5 coin of similar size, then do away with $1 and $5 bills. But, that won't happen, so... I carry several half dollars all the time. I just like having them. I also use them as special rewards for the kids.

Hey, I actually use them.
Being twice the size of a quarter was important when they were silver but now that just makes them awkward.

At the risk of being cynical, our morbid fascination for dead presidents. The DOT, CFA, and others should have petitioned congress to utilize the size and composition of the coin for the new National Parks series. Unfortunately, the so-called "Boomer" mentality still likes to hang on to a past we were far eager to change in the 60s.

I don't think they are so large as to be awkward (my older son was using one to draw a circle the other day and he said that he thought half dollars were bigger than that). I like that they are big enough that I can easily tell what I have when I feel it in my pocket.

Quote: I do not understand why the mint still makes these if nobody actually uses them. For what it is worth, since 2002 they have only been made for collectors, not general circulation. Quote: The DOT, CFA, and others should have petitioned congress to utilize the size and composition of the coin for the new National Parks series I have to agree.

They are fun to spend. I like to spend them but the real fun is in spending Ike dollars. I used one at the drive through to buy a sweet tea the other day and the girl that took it I don't think has ever seen one before. Plus I don't think they are that good looking of a coin so I spend them to get rid of them.

They are neat hefty coins that are still reasonable to acquire in a date set. I like getting them from the bank and spending them. I see the point for ending the Kennedy series, but not the denomination itself.

Quote: How come? They are an awkward coin, and almost as unaccepted by the public as the SBA, or the Indian dollar. Hence they are produced mainly for collectors, in very small quantities.

Quote: Do they make THAT much money from selling them to collectors? Since they started making them just for collectors they have made an average of about 4 million coins for each mint each year so 8 million coins. Two million of those go into the mint sets. That leaves 6 million for the rolls and bags. That makes 300,000 rolls of 150,000 roll sets. A roll set cost $35 so that is $5,250,000. Each coin cost about 8 cents to make so their costs are $48,000. So the NET profit is $5,202,000. Do you know any business willing to give up $5 million in profits to save $48K in costs? After all it's a 10,800% return on investment.
