I have just come across this penny. On the reveres is what looks like a punched ring just above Brittania's knee. It does not go through the penny. Any thoughts on what this might be.

It's an attempt piercing/deliberate post production damage.

It may have once been a pin/brooch. A lot of Victoria-era coins were used for jewelry.
