When I was a kid my friends and I used to play with stainless steel marbles (from ball bearings). Sometimes we would hold them over the flame of natural gas stove, and they would tone in a similar hue.

I suspect that, given the right storage conditions, the 75% copper from which the coin was made, may have something to do with the blue result that is seen.
