There are two things I don't quite get with this coin, first the letters 'dissapearing' into the rim and second, there are traces of an inner circle, can someone tell me what's going on? Thanks! The devices are weak because of this die flow. But I wonder if a weak strike is present. The area next to the rim is very weak. What does the reverse look like? Report this Post to the Staff

mikediamond Pillar of the Community United States 2734 Posts	Posted 07/21/2010 08:49 am Nickels of this era have an unusually convex die face, especially at the margins. If a strike is even slightly weak, coin metal will not rise high enough to fill the rim gutter of the die. I suspect that's what happened here. It's a very common effect.
