I was in Las Vegas this weekend and went to the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop. It was cool to actually see it in person but its a lot smaller than you might think.

I went to their coin section and it was MUCH smaller than I thought. They had like 10 gold coins and 3 Peace dollars.

Anyways they had a gold dollar certified by PCGS that read "AU 50 Mount Removed"

At first I thought ex-jewelry but they wouldnt have graded it.

Anyone know what Mount Removed means?

It the commemorative coin honoring Mt. Removed in Southern Nevada. Check the reverse and you should see the distinct image of the famed Mount.

Ah yes, Mount Removed. I've vacationed there several times. The skiing is fabulous in the winter, usually 18" of powder atop a 3 foot packed base. I have heard of the gold coin hoard, but have never seen an actual specimen. A nice example in a PCGS holder should bring quite a premium.

"Mount Removed" means it is an ex-jewelry piece. Are you sure it wasn't an ANACS or NGC slab? If it was a PCGS slab it should have been "Genuine" and not AU50.

yes I am 100% positive it was PCGS. Thats why I was so confused. they actually assigned it a grade and also labeled it with Mount Removed.

It shouldn't be too difficult to call the shop and ask the cert.# on the piece. If they really want to sell, it should be no problem.

Could have been a fake slab but it seems unlikely someone would fake a slab and label it "Mount Removed".

PCGS error is a possibility too.
