Isn't 1oz of silver worth $20 or so? Not that it matters, I can't stand any of the Olympic coins; for being ugly and for being the Olympics. If the Olympics weren't a cash grab run by corporations and damaging every city they visited I'd probably dislike these ugly coins less.

Wow, kyrio - you actually wrote more than 10 words on this post! This coin struck your Olympic chord didn't it?
Off topic... but I'm curious. What did you mean by "damaging every city they visited"? You mean the athletes, the visitors?

The Olympics have come to a point where they are run to make money at all costs, even over our own freedoms. In Athens they were forcing people to take their shirts off because they had the rings on them or anything referring to Athens and the Olympics. They did this because the shirts didn't come from the IOCs official channels. In the USA they forced local businesses with the words referring to the Olympics (such as restaurants called Olympia) that had been in business for 10+ years to change their business names. In Canada this year they trademarked a line from O Canada, something which is illegal in itself.
Montreal just recently finished paying off its debt from building for the Olympics. It had been 30 years. In general the Olympics cost the city and country a fortune. It inconveniences many for the benefit of an extremely small amount of locals and all of the big corporations. There has never been a study that showed the Olympics economically benefiting the host city/country.
Trying to get the Olympics to your city is about as retarded as trying to get a G* meeting in your city. Worked out well for Toronto.
Let's not even go into how it's possible China was allowed to host the games with the way things go on over there.

"In 2006, a family-owned restaurant in Vancouver called Olympic Pizza was ordered by VANOC to pull its sign down because it infringed on the Olympic trademark. However, public outcry forced VANOC to back off." http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNe...25/20080925/You should also read up on why trademarking certain things is illegal and how it's illegal for the IOC (and VANOC) to trademark almost everything they have.

I have a complete set of Silver maple leaf from 1988 to date with every variety of SEALED ones... I think those Olympic bullion are a slap to the face to the real collector of silver maple leaf ... They produced the first one sealed in the plastic pouch with RCM logo (That I think is a must for the collection) and produce the second and third one unsealed whats the point of that? Broke the collection pattern.... and now they gather a bunch of bullion leftover and gold plate it and resell for over 3 time its value common! Its not usual for me to complaint on a new product as I have high respect for the art of producing coins, but with this one I kinda think the mint looking more for premium than satisfy real silver maple leaf collectors. and if one of the RCM staff read this message : KEEP THE FUTURE SILVER MAPLE LEAF SEALED IN RCM POUCH ! I will not buy this item as I can gold plate one for less than half the real price... but won't do it...

SilverMaple, The RCM staff will read and might even respond to your comment. But you need to send it to the RCM. I sympathize with your frustration but this release has a low mintage of 10,000 - something to consider. The packaging is different and I agree that it is a problem... I was also furious when the RCM decided to issued $350.00 Finest 99999 Gold coins in cheap plastic cigarette cases!

I may be Wrong....but is this coin not the first S.M.L. ever completely Gold plated by the mint....So if you collect S.M.L's you probably have to buy one ....even if you don't really like this gold Plated Hockey one...I personally like it and did order one....

Yes it's the first completly gold plated. Selective gold plating have been made on 2008-2009-2010 olympic silver maple leaf the set produce earlier this year and the 20th anniversary SML produce in 2008 with gold plated leaf (this one I understand the point of plating the leaf in gold). Those are the only bullion with selective or complete gold plating by mint.
Regular Hockey silver maple leaf priced : 20-30$
Hockey silver maple leaf plated gold price: 72$
No difference between each coin exept the plating in gold , How much fake bullion do you think is on the market right now ? Why sell regular Maple leaf when you can gold plate them and resale for twice the price...

Yes Silver Maple....I see your point...I guess we will have to have a good eye...to sort out the fakes....It is my understanding that the R.C.M is the world leader in gold plating tec.So any S.M.L. done by an outside company should look be inferior...

oh.. I forgot one other thing...these 10,000 S.M.L come in a presentation box and are numbered...so just gold plating regular hockey S.M.L would not cut it....If a person was buying one in the aftermarket...the seller would also have to have the whole package.

Good point Koin. The cost associated with the presentation box and COA has to be considered. But I still think the price is a bit high.

Just thought I'd close on this thread. Outstanding coin, perhaps a little over priced but the quality was there. Not a huge fan of sports myself but the gold plating does make sense.
