Is a MAD always on the obverse, or are there examples where the reverse is misaligned?

You do see both. I've always heard it is less common to find them on the reverse, and so far that seems to be my experience as well. I probably find 2-3X as many on the obverse.

Major misaligned dies of the anvil die are quite rare because the neck of the anvil die is surrounded by the collar. This restrains any significant lateral movement. The only time a major lateral shift can occur is when the collar + anvil die breaks loose or the collar breaks apart, freeing the anvil die from its grip.

Very minor misalignments of the anvil die can occur but can be no greater than the amount of room between the die neck and collar.

So Mike, if we find a coin that is seriously misaligned on the reverse, would it carry a premium?
Rest in Peace

Scooby, sometimes the reverse die is the hammer die and not the anvil die. You would have to prove the reverse die was the anvil die for this rarity. Mike, if you do have a MAD involving the anvil die then wouldn't there also be some kind of problem with the edge strike because of the broken collar? If I understand this correctly, on anvil die MAD there will be something else going on with the coin.

You are correct. A major horizontal misalignment of the anvil die is always associated with either a broadstrike or a broken collar error.
