What was going on in 1989 with cents to prompt the flared G design change? In earlier times a design change indicated a weight or alloy change. What happened here? Also, any idea about how many 1988 & 1988 Ds were struck with the new G, and how it happened.

That's great info John but still doesn't answer why the changes were made. I'm still curious.

Generally design changes are made because the master hub wears out, and instead of just going back to the old plaster they create a new one. Most of the time they change thicknesses to devices to improve proper flow and detail in the finished product. The reason for the change to the 1986-1988 design was probably the steps in the memorial building. The reason for the change to the 1989-1992 design was probably to even out the design a little better and make it flatter. The 1993-date design was most likely a final stage of making the design as shallow as possible while making the letters sharper and easier to strike up.

It is not true that design changes accompany alloy changes. In Lincoln cents this has happened only once, and we have been through dozens of design changes (most very minor)...and to add, the design change in 1982 had nothing to do with the alloy change. They both just happened to occur in the same year.

If there were 5 dies used during the coining of these cents, how long do you think it will take these coins to go from rare to common?

Razor, it is the 1988-D (not the Philly) that is the rare one...I think there is only one known die for that one.
