Hi --

I'd like to get a coin scale. Can you recommend the best one for hobbyist?

Things I want to do with it:
-weight 1982 penny to get different ones for my Whitman book
-learn to tell and check if any coins I buy at shows are genuine (so say weight a Morgan silver dollar)

Thank you!

I think you should spend a few bucks more and get one that weighs to the nearest 0.01 gram. I'm happy with my Digiweigh DW-100AS, found on ebay.

Basically true. Almost any decent scale today is good for 0.01Grams. There are a lot of scales out there on ebay so be carefull. Some are really cheap China made junk. You may want to do a little searching first with local scientific or jewlery stores and supply houses. If you purchsed one from there and it doesn't work, easy to bring back. Of course if it is cheap enough on ebay, might not even be worth sending back.
As to the difference in weight of the 1982 Lincoln Cents there have been several methods mentioned here previously. You may try the Search tab for those. I'd tell you where they are but I'm lousy at finding stuff.

IF the main reason you buy a scale is for the Lincoln 82's, you could have saved money. Almost anyone here has been made aware of the famous, simple, easiest scale and you make it yourself.
Take a popsicle or ice creame bar stick, pencil, glue and your almost there. Best if the pencil is a 6 sided one. Place the stick on the pencil so it balances with a drop of glue at that point so it stays in place. When dry place any Lincoln Cent dated after 1982 at the far end of one side of the stick. now place any 1982 Lincoln Cent on the far opposite side. If the 82 drops down fast, it is Copper. If it sort of lingers or balances, it is the Zinc ones.
Simple and you get to eat what was on your scale before you made it. And it is resuable forever and batteries not required.

I ended up getting the American Weigh AMW-100. It's 100 gram x 0.01 gram and came with a 100 gram calibration weight. I got it at Amazon for $16 (and free shipping with my Amazon Prime :)

I use it for Morgans but I also did my 1982 Lincolns with it. I'm happy with it :)

For the specs you gave, it seems you only need grams in a 0.1 graduation. For precious metals you want also ounces troy, and others come with ounces (avoirdupois) and grains.

The larger the graduation the bigger the price. You want a small scale, from 1-50 grams in 0.1 graduation. The rest is up to you with brand and supply (and hence price).

Larger scales (kilos) will cost more, too. Any handheld digital scale will do you for on the go, or a hang-weight for home-use, or a triple-beam. But digital is the way to go.
