Here are some pix of my most recent set-up.

My-Coin-Photo-Set-Up

This is my standard set-up with my Canon SLR. I use a stock zoom lens that came with the camera and have bought $10 Close-Up Macro Filters to attach to the lens for super macro shots.

For lights I use daylight corrected fluorescent photo lights.

My-Coin-Photo-Set-Up

Same set-up but instead I used my less than $200 Panasonic Lumix. These cameras are rated as having the best macro lens for close-ups. I have seen them on sale for as low as $140 US.

My-Coin-Photo-Set-Up

This is a shot from the Panasonic point and shoot. Set for macro (pushed the little flower icon) everything else is default automatic mode.

Here is a picture of the Panasonic fx48. I believe they are being replaced by the fx75 this year. Most important attribute of this camera is the Leica Lens. The best lens ever.

Very cool. I hope to have a good "corner" set up soon for all my coin needs. I may need to invest in a good camera too. iPhones dont shoot the best pics. LOL

great set-up, I agree with vgasca, I defiantly want to get my little set-up up and running instead of in my head. I really like how you have the lights set up with the tripod I had a similar thought, now seeing yours I think I can complete it, thanks for sharing

Glad to be of help. Those light stands go for cheap on dealnews occasionally. I have a pretty fancy heavy duty tripod that's overkill for this application. If your just using the tripod for home use you don't need something that is built for lugging through a jungle.

Its funny someone mentioned I Phone. I use my Sprint Evo (cell phone) with 8mp. Put camera lens through one of the eye pieces of my Stereoscope. I bought the camera that goes in the eye pc for stereo scope photos but have to play with it a little the lighting is off. Now I plan to set up a similar set up as you Stunet as soon as I can get a good enough camera for a decent price. I just bought a new lexmark all in one the S605 does everything but what I bought it for. Scan Coins Well. I'm not sure if its just the lexmark software that's not good enough or it is indeed a low quality scanner. Bad Planning On my Part. Impulse buy. But once I get pics on memory card I can send to email from printer. Woopie. I bought the camera and Stereoscope from http://www.amscope.com
Strong Stereoscope doesn't get full View of coins but almost on Lincolns Down. 3mp camera for computer viewing software to measure edit ect. for $250. Every where else was way higher for this quality scope.

What kind of stands do you have your lights attached to? Where can I find them?

Also, what kind of close-up macro filters do you have? I can't really afford to go out and buy a new macro lens for my Nikon D3000, but definitely need to do something as the 18-55mm lens that came with it just doesn't cut it.

Those stands show up for sale every so often on Dealnews. You can also find them on ebay for $30 or so. A couple clamp lights from a hardware store would do as well.

The macro filters are also available on ebay. You need to know the width of your lens. It usually says on the lens. Mine is 52 mm.
Search "52mm Macro Filter" in ebay. I have two. A 10+ and a 4+, they cost under $10. Often you can buy them direct from China for cheap if you don't mind waiting a couple weeks.

If your using a stock 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens it probably is 52mm.
