I have some 1776-1976 s Washington proof quarters My question is this; Are all the S proofs part silver? Or did the mint make some clad proofs from the SF mint. Also, what is the percentage of silver in the silver proofs?

San Fransisco made clad proofs and silver proofs that year. The silver were "outer layers of .800 silver, .200 copper bonded to inner core of .209 silver, .791 copper(net weight .0739 oz. pure silver)." from the Red Book

Pretty certain there were clad proofs that year. The silver content of the silver proofs would be 40%.

If I'm not mistaken the 40% silver proofs came in a three coin set: quarter, half and dollar whereas the clad proofs came in the regular six coin proof set with the other non-bicentennial 1976 proofs as well. If you can't tell if they are silver visually you can use the tissue test.

I like the tissue test, too. It comes in handy if you find out they're not silver!

Place a Kleenex tissue over the coin. Look through the tissue at the coin, if you see white, it's silver.

You should really do this as a comparison test though to be sure. That is, take a clad coin, a silver coin if you have one, and this coin. Look at all three through the tissue and you should be able to easily tell which way your quarter leans.

Do not forget that the 1975 proof sets had the 1776-1976 dated Quarter, Half, and Dollar as well.

Here is a demonstration of the tissue test.

They made 7 million copper nickel clad proofs (two years production 1975 and 1976) and 4 million 40% silver proofs (all made in 1975 but many were unsold and were melted down by the mint in 1982. After 35 years the mint has still not released any final figures for the Bicentennial silver sets.)
