Hi,

Unfortunatly this is not common in Australia.

Have no idea why someone would do this to a coin.

It is man made, sorry.

I would hazard a guess it was done to put them on a bracelet. I've seen a couple with holed coins like this on them.

I have to agree that its definately post mint damage and a bracelet would probably be a good guess also, if it were actually done at the mint the holes would be alot cleaner looking instead of having the wallered out look like the holes in your coin has

Hi djluster,

I know I'm only a newbie, but I have seen these before. At a monthly Sunday market I have seen Pennies, Half-Pennies & Shillings with thin leather strips threaded through the holes, and they are sold as necklaces. Although, I can't imagine that they could possibly be comfortable to wear, and I'd hate to go through the airport metal detector with one on!

Hope this helps.

Hi Dj

The previous posters are correct, the holes were drilled to make some kind of jewelry from these coins,, the result is coins which once had some value as numismatic coins with history,, the D mint is in fact Denver, these are the coins I collect, US Minted Aussie Issue silver.

Into a silver disc having only the value of the metal.
