Here's another penny in the batch that my neighbor bought. It doesn't show well in the photo (i don't have the nice microscope with the camera that he has!) so hopefully it shows it well enough.

It may not show in the pictures, but its' a red/brown color, details look good. Any thoughts on the grade?

Welcome to the forum. Hope the lot of coins didn't cost very much.

The relationship of the feathers to the letters in "AMERICA" is different than on this PCGS graded 1909-S:

1909-S-Ih

So the counterfeiter apparently used a Type I obverse (used from 1859-1886) as the model.

That's a very definite diagnostic; that obverse type did not exist after 1886. Something to also remember about 1909: individual dies were not dated--there is only one date position, as shown on the graded coin.

hmm .. thanks guys. I've been collecting pennies for 30 years now. Well, not too much in the last 20, but I'm still kinda surprised at the level of counterfeiting out there.

My first impression of this coin was that it was a counterfeit.

Good catch Steve. I didn't even notice that. What bothered me was the uneven dentacles on the obverse, especially from 12oclock to 2oclock. Definitely fake.
