Hope I'm not being redundant (already posted this coin in the grading forum) but this is a variety that will catch the interest of some of the members, and I felt it might be appropriate to post it here as well.....might be some of you who follow this forum that don't bother with the grading forum, and vice versa. I've wanted one of these for quite some time - not real sure just why because I haven't really concentrated on the Two Cents pieces - just picked one up here and there until I've got all but the last 2 ('72 and '73) and, given the prices being asked for them, I may never get either of those two. Anyway, I just thought it was a cool coin and wanted to share it with y'all. Ralph

There are varieties of Small motto 1864 2 Cents though not as many as the 1864 large motto. I see nothing obvious on this one that would indicate it's a variety. looks like a common small motto to me :-)
A good start would be Kevin Flynn's book though its in grave need of revision...
Its a nice coin and deserves to be shown off where ever you can...

nohope587, I assumed the small motto and large motto Two Cents pieces would both be considered varieties for the year 1864. Hadn't given any thought to varieties within varieties (learn something every day in this amazing hobby). I notice you put a smiley behing your comment about "a common small motto" .....has anyone ever determined just how many of the small motto coins were minted, or is there even a record with that info on it? Everything I've seen shows only the overall mintage for the 1864 Two Cents piece. Ralph

I vaguely remember reading some numbers somewhere but off the top of my head I don't know. If you compare the prices of the 72 and the 64 SM you will see the 72 is about double. So you could deduce that there were twice as many.. this however does not take into account the fact that by 1872 the demand and need for 2 Cents had fallen...

If the capability exists, could someone please point out with arrows precisely marking the small motto version the areas on the coin that make this a more valuable small motto version.
I also would love to have comparative illustrations to help better illustrate the difference.
Thanks

I still like the difference in the motto: The small motto "D" in "GOD" is just about upright (does not follow the curve of the ribbon) while the "D" in "GOD" on the large motto is tilted over to the right (and follows the curve of the ribbon). It's a dead giveaway.

If the motto isn't visible look at he top left cluster of leaves. Look at the outermost leaf just below the ribbon. On the small motto this leaf is very large and in close to the ribbon. (see the photo posted by Ralph). On the large motto coins that leaf is very small as well away from the ribbon (Compare to the photo posted by Fatboy. The outer leaf is just a little nubbin below the G in GOD.)

i love this coin I was up late one nite and was surfing through ebay and come across a small motto the pics the seller took weren't very good so I took the pics an blew them up and keep comparing the to nice coins and worn coins the pics were so bad that the coin sold for $560 so I took the chance big risk but I lucked out the coin was at least a ms 64 and is monster toned awesome got lucky could have gone the other way and ben unhappy but I was lucky chock this up to luck my pics don't do the coin any justice also the coin looks to have a wear spot in the center of the shield but in investigating I found this was a low spot in the planket or die error
