Here's a Buffalo nickel I found years ago in a gentleman's coin collection. It appears as though a glob of metal adhered to the surface of the coin after it was struck, and then it was restruck--you can actually see some of the letters of "Liberty" scattered randomly in the glob. I was wondering what type of error this would be, and if it's fairly common or rare. Thanks!

Consider the possibility of a hobo gone bad with fleeting thoughts of salvage.

You both lost me on that one--what's a hobo nickel? (Yes, I know I'm not too bright when it comes to matters like this)

Well, yours is a strange coin for sure....the letters that you see in the indian's head are larger than those on the periphery of the coin, so it is not from a double strike or anything like that, I suspect a hand punch, and although I have never seen a hobo nickel that incorporated a punch, there is no reason to believe that they do not exist......I really do not know what the cause of your coin's appearance is, but it just looked to me like someone has deliberately altered it.....Here is a link to a thread that illustrates some of the many things that folks will do to coins....(for fun, profit, and out of boredom).

To me it looks like added solder and then they punched it. What does the other side look like?
