1697-Sixpence

1697, King William III, Silver Sixpence. This coin dating from 1697 has the 1st bust of King William. Not sure of what percentage the silver is mostly needing some sort of a grading.

The weight is 5/6 grams, 25/26mm width, and 1mm thick. Its not bent in any way just seems to be worn.

Also to afraid to clean the foreign green substance just in case.

Silver content is 0.925 silver.
The grade is Fair/Nearly Fine in UK terms.
The green should lift off with a dip in ammonia solution and a rinse under cold water.

Just wondering, because I have only just started to collect. Is there a online shop to buy these chemicals? Do I need a license to hold? and is there some book I could find and buy that gives me an idea on what chemicals are used for what type of coin and how to use them?

The general rule is DON'T CLEAN coins at all.
Ammonia is freely available at your local chemists shop or hardware shop.
It is only to be used on silver coins with acatual silver content (not cupri-nickel coins).
It will only remove surface dirt from a coin and does not affect the natural toning.
The method is to immerse the coin in the ammonia using a small container, for about 2-3 minutes. Remove the coin and rinse thoroughly in running water. Place it on kitchen towel and leave to dry. DO NOT RUB< POLISH OR SCRAPE THE COIN AT ANY POINT.
If at all unsure just leave it as is.
