I highly recommend having the "money" discussion BEFORE you get married. However, better late than never. There are lots of ways people in relationships deal with money, how you work it is less important than having an agreement in advance. Nothing worse than finding out you are expected to work extra hours to support your wifes shoe habit, or vice versa. If you are a saver & marry a spender you can bet it won't work out in the long run.

1st. Why did you get married?
2nd. She gets half when you get divorced!
3rd. Yes you will get divorced, so why did you get married?
Sorry, people don't stay married like they used too.

How about this: If there's a fire, your coins will melt but the silver is still silver and the gold is still gold. Sure the numi value is gone, but the PM value is still there.

But with stamps, if there's a fire all she has left is ashes.

OK, now to get serious. There was some great advice from people (except for razorear - dude, that is sick!). Communication is probably the most important thing right now. The key is to keep away from "you did this, why can't I do that?" You are not in competition with her; you are a team. Work together and come up with a compromise and solution that satisfies her.

If all else fails, this phrase never will - "Yes, dear."

In reality I really don't see a problem. With any couple there are differences of opinions, likes and dislikes, past times, friends, etc. Men and women are different and you both should know that by now pending how old you are. For example you really don't find a lot of women changing their oil in their cars but many men do. If you go to a coin show, gun show, knife show or train show you see about 99% men. If you go to a dog show, cat show, sewing show you see mostly women. Watch TV and notice most programs about knitting or sewing are with women, not men. What I mean is I really don't see why you two even discuss any differences in hobbies.
Should be a great chance to do things together since at many coin shows there are some that sell stamps. Several so called coin stores in my area are in reality hobby shops and sell stamps as well.
Go to these places together.

Ok so it all worked out. I explained to her how they only minted 4,400 coins and how its rarity is worth money. She was a little ticked and basically told me not to do it again. I made sufficient documentation and basically made a presentation to her. In the future I'll consult her on all major purchases. I don't want to end up divorced like Razor said so I'll be as honest as I can even if it lands me in the dog house.

Just kid to her, and tell her that she is more valuable to you than your coins; you never know, she may accept both you and your coins! Wouldn't that be sweet?

Is the problem the fact that you spent so much on one coin, or the fact that even your common coins are much more than her stamps?

Since she collect stamps she probably understands the concepts of rarity, and price and demand. The fact is there are just a lot more collectors of coins than there are collectors of stamps. So even on that common Morgan dollar the demand causes it to have a premium value. And $35 may sound like a lot but that is only about $15 over the value of the metal in the coin, not really that much of a premium at all. In the case of the GSA Morgan it is NOT a common coin so the demand is even higher and that results in a high price. In stamps you might compare it to the Graf Zepplin stamps. They were a high face value when they were issued so not many were sold. They are rare today and even with the smaller collector base they are still worth a lot of money because of the high demand. As a general rule, coins with the larger collector base are more expensive than stamps. But you do promise to consult with her in the future before making a large purchase.

I collect stamps and coins, actually my stamp collection is worth alot more than my coin collection... but that is another story. Explain to her that collecting coins is like collecting early US, it can get expensive really quick. Yes you can buy UN stamps for almost free, but that is no fun. Just like collecting coins from circ is fun to a point.

She is in a better market for stamps now, as alot of them are undervalued now (More so than coins), which depending on how long she has been collecting she will know that.

That being said just agree on a dollar ammout it is ok for either of you to spend, and you will have no problem.

But if she collects cat or windmill etc. stamps for pictures you may have a hard time explaing it.

Is she aware of stamps that are worth lots of money? Even so, spend an equal amount each time.
