Some of you may know I'm working on a certified AU-58 type set. Lately I've bought almost nothing because what little I've see nhas been outrageously priced/bid up. But here's one I just won the other day at a very reasonable price (bordering on a steal), an 1852 large cent, graded ANACS AU-58. I just thought I'd show it off a bit... http://homepage.mac.com/ziggy29/Med...bv_large.jpghttp://homepage.mac.com/ziggy29/Med...ev_large.jpgThere are still occasional good buys to be found. Tou just have have to be diligent and disciplined to avoid paying way too much or buying a mistake.

ziggy29, Very pretty coin, an AU58 type set is quite an undertaking! I'm working on a vf or better (I have some lower grades that I'm trying to upgrade as I go along) set of certified type coins primarily housed in ANACS slabs all pre 1866. The caveat is that I will buy higher grades(I know they don't match!!!)on the lower cost coins all the way to MS63. How are you progressing on this set? AU58'S can get mighty pricy these days, specially on the old stuff! [:p] Mike

Well, yeah. I really don't expect to get the old Flowing Hair and Draped Bust stuff in that grade. But for now there's plenty for me to pursue at prices I can still afford, and maybe later, either I will come across more money than I currently expect or I'll reduce my target grade. But as long as there are affordable 58s to pursue, I will. If I'm lucky, some day I might be able to buy an AG Draped Bust/Small Eagle half of 1796-97. I doubt it, though.

Very nice, Ziggy. Are you also attributing them as you get them?

Not yet. It's definitely on my to-do list. I've done it for some types and series I collect, but not this one...yet.

I spend hours sometimes studying one coin hoping upon hope that I'll stumble upon something someone missed...A missing serif, a new unidentified die break, a new over date, doubling, die clash, anything no one else caught before! So far I'm still looking and glad of it. I'm really bad when I get a new coin. I make myself wait and use it as a reward for something special before I allow myself more then the original cursory once over. Gosh am I weird or what!!!! Mike

Ziggy,
Very nice coin. You already know how much I love your AU set, along with how you put it together. All collectors would do good to follow your example.
