I have a bunch of early mint and proof sets. Some told me that I need to remove them from the mint packaging before PVC damage occurs.

Any truth to that? Thanks in advance.

I'm not aware of ANY US MINT products that used PVC. The mint/proof sets are far from air tight, so most of them tone....that's probably what they meant.

What are you calling "early"? The 1940s/50s Mint Sets didn't use any plastic, they were contained in cardboard holders held in an envelope. The 1930s/40s/early 50s Proof Sets had the coins in individual cellophane pouches in a small box.

I agree this may depend on just how old a set your talking about. I've got proof sets from as far back as the 60's and never had a problem with discoloring, toning, tarnishing, etc.
I suspect it is more important to check out the person that told you that. May not know anything about coins. May not even know what a proof set is.

Some years ago I bought a 1960 short proof set of South Africa, Crown to Halfpenny, that was presented in a mint sealed clear soft pvc heat welded pack. The coins are still in the pack, and seem to be totally unaffected by the pvc. At the same time I bought a similarly presented proof set of Fiji with the .925 silver dollar, down to the bronze cent. The similarly sealed coins were enclosed in an electric blue velvet lined box. In this case, the coins have developed a blue tinge, but the pvc interestingly, has developed a strong electric blue colour from the velvet. I suspect that the blue colour of the coins has leached through the pvc.

Thanks gang, that's what I thought. The guy is in a dinghy and the oars just can't reach the water. Appreciate it!

US Mint products do not and have not contained PVC. Products from many (not all) world mints HAVE used PVC.
