I googled this and found that there was actually someone who perhaps was going to write this but never did. In any case, can anyone recommend a book describing varieties and things to look for on common coins? It doesn't have to be exclusively about common coins but as I search rolls, it would be nice to know what to look for on all common coinage.

Look for the CherryPickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States coins

I think there are two volumes broken up by denominations

they're not exactly cheap either, like 30 bucks each I think

Cover price of each volume is $39.95. Not cheap, but a fantastic resource nonetheless.

The CPG includes alot of coins that would be virtually impossible to find in circulation so that may be overkill, especially with 2 volumes. Something more suited to roll searching would be Ken Potter's Strike it Rich with Pocket Change.

I agree with biookemist6. Inexpensive, easy to read. One of the first books I bought when I started collecting.

Thanks for those fine recommendations. I bought them both. Cherrypickers 2008 hardback for $26 and Strike it Rich with Pocket Change 2009 for $12. I love Amazon prime with free shipping. I only saw one version of the CherryPickers Guide. There was one in 2006 that was spiral bound and 2008 is the hardback.
