Found this at a garage sale. I looked it up and that year (1974) all the dollar coins were proofs and this is not proof and I dont think it is silver. 1974 S(?)

Can you check the weight of the coin?

http://www.coincommunity.com/us_dol...senhower.asp

Circulation Strike Weight: 22.7 grams
40% Silver Weight: 24.6 grams

Since it looks clad, I suspect it is a 40% silver one.

Well actually according to "A Buyer's Guide to Silver & Trade dollars" 2nd ed by Q. D. Bowers and the Red Book, there were almost 2,000,000 business strikes also made that were silver clad. There were only a little over 1,000,000 Proofs struck.

24.6 grams * 0.4 = little less than 10 grams of silver.

or 0.3162 oz

Not a bad pickup for $2. Has about $5.83 worth of silver in.

If it is a 1974-S, and it is not a proof then it is 40% silver clad. There were no copper nickel clad business strikes that year.

you could always soak it in acetone and see if the mintmark falls off.

OR a butane torch may also have some effect.
